Your son/daughter are not you

Dear parents,

I know 10, 20, 30 years ago before I was born, you were a seasoned black belt or world champion or had the strongest punch/kick/block, one person can fight 100 person. But now it is 10,20,30 years later. Your uniform no longer fits, you can barely lift your leg above your knee and you send your child to learn karate from me.

You put your hopes, dreams, aspirations on  your kid and you project yourself onto your kid, thinking if you were talented in martial art, DNA dictates your kid will also be a martial art prodigy.

Then  you get mad when things don't go your way. You are appalled when  your kid does not display the same prowess or even interest in martial art as yourself 10,20,30 years ago. When your kid gets reprimanded, you get mad. When your kid does not qualify to take test, you try to strong arm your way and demand that I bend to your will. When my teaching methods does not concur with your 'principles', you try to dictate how I should teach. And when things don't go your way, you pull your kid out, effectively branding them as quitters; no matter how you try to sugar coat it.

Which begs me to ask this question, why oh why did you send your kid to me when you think you can do a better job of teaching? Why oh why do you burden him/her with tons of tuition and swimming, gymnastics, running, and then get mad when they cannot FOCUS on karate?

Sincerely,
A karate teacher
